The 1894-S dime had a mintage of 24 pieces of which 9 are known today. No record of any 1894 dimes struck at the San Francisco Mint exists. The commonly held belief is that the chief coiner and/or mint superintendent produced a few proof examples for themselves and friends.

Legend has it that the young Hallie Daggett, daughter of Superintendent Daggett, was given three specimens by her father to hold until they became valuable. On the way home from the mint, temptation set in at the ice cream parlor where she spent one for a dish of the delicious treat. They others were saved as instructed by her father. She sold them to a San Francisco coin dealer in the 1950's.

The Barber design, named for its creator Charles Barber, was employed on dimes, quarters and half-dollars from 1892 to 1916. This fabulous dime is the finest of all known survivors.
